For as long as I can remember I have always had a camera in my hand, starting with my dad’s Praktica film camera, until he got fed up with me using up his film, so as soon as I started work I bought my first film SLR, an Olympus OM30, which allowed me to learn the basic skills of photography. The rise of the autofocus lens then drew me to the Canon EOS 650 and from then on, I was truly hooked. I’ve now gone mirrorless, still with Canon, but now combined with the OM System OM-1 which is perfect for my travel adventures.
I joined my first Camera club in 1988 and it proved to be a great environment to expand my photographic knowledge a well as encouraging me to experiment with genres and techniques. I also learnt how to process and print my own images in the darkroom as well as appreciate the qualities of black & white compared to colour. Join a camera club, it’s great fun and a terrific way to learn!
My camera has always been a portal which has enabled me to explore not just photography, but also discover and travel the globe in search of the next image. It has introduced me to friends across the world as well as at home…wonderful people who I probably would never have met otherwise. I love the challenge of capturing that moment in time which would normally be a fleeting instant often missed in a blink of an eye, such as a bird taking off or a canoeist being swamped by water. Most of all it is also an escape, those quiet moments of contemplation either searching for an image or sat in a hide waiting for something to happen does wonders for my overall well-being.
My photography is so much more to me than just taking the ‘competitive photograph’, in 2014 I started Image Chasers a website where I could exhibit the images that I enjoyed capturing but may never see the light of day in a competition.
